Big change in KyPass Companion:

favoriteThe tree view was removed!
At the place, a view will all your favorite groups (actually, the groups at the root).
A future version will allow you to personalize this list.


quickswitchThe group list is still available from the K button.

This new user interface could add some new bugs. Don’t hesitate to send your bug report on this blog.

This version includes also:

  • option to hide the icon in the dock (as asked by many of you).
  • no more GPL3 source.
  • some bug fixes.

    Understand how to use it! Need to click on “k” logo(or group-name) as you show on 2-nd screen. Can I ask you about feature request: in password entry we can save text file in advanced options. And from “KyPass” I can only export it to some place and then edit it. Can you add embedded editor for text files by double click?

    Guten Tag,
    Es bestehen Probleme mit Kypass pro in IOS. Das Programm soll webdav können. Wie funktioniert das?
    1. Fehler:
    Werden über das +Zeichen neue Gruppen oder Einträge eingerichtet werden diese nicht gespeichert. Wird das App geschlossen und wieder geöffnet, sind alle Änderung nicht mehr da. Dies ist ein no go.

    Ich versuche per Webdav die kdb und Schlüsseldatei einen Zugriff auf owncloud meines NAS zu erhalten. Auslagerungen solcher Daten auf Dienstleister -Cloud wie iCloud, dropbox etc kommen nicht in Frage.
    Über “+” “download from web” gebich folgende url an: https://:/remote.php/webdav/.kdb Es folgt weder eine Verbindung, noch ein Fehler. Es passiert einfach nichts.
    Was ist falsch?
    Ohne diesen Mangel und dem nicht funktionierendem Speichern ist die App wertlos. Das kostenlose MiniKeePass macht die Grundaufgaben einfacher und besser, biete aber kein webdav.
    Sie machen aber Werbung mit webdav. Wie kann es funktionsfähig genutzt werden?

      1. It’s fixed in v2.4 (submitted 3 days ago to Apple). Actually, you have to press the edit button and after, the pencil button to add a new entry.
      2. I don’t understand your Webdav problem. Are you sure of the url ? Could you open the url from safari mobile ?

      PS.
      v2.4 will have a full webdav support (in the 2 way).

        1. OK; I still waiting for the update.
        2. The URL is correct. When entering in IOS Safari browser the connection is made.
        In the APP kypass pro nothing happens. Neither compound nor error message. The window closes without any action.

    hi, tried to create a new database with companion. did appear to work, but was not possible to add new entries. too bad, because it looks so nice.
    looking forward to a fix for this. will donate than, because keepass x via dropbox screws up with the file locking.

    Cannot receive generated password.
    Is your version of KeePassHttp up-to-date?

      I have the last chromeIPass extension and I don’t have this message.
      Do you have linked chromeIPass to kypass companion ? Go in the settings panel and look for the connected database.

    Hi,
    Keepass on windows, keepasshttp fills in the username + pass when there is a match on the main domain without www. So in my entry i filled in “google.com”, when i go to accounts.google.com, it fills in the username and password. Kypass doesn’t work this way, instead i have to fill in “www.accounts.google.com” or it wont find a match. Problem is; a website like google with login boxes on different subdomains, i have to make a entry for each subdomain.

    Can you fix the url matching system so it will match google.com to accounts.google.com.

    Looking good, but accessing sub folders thing is a bit confusing. I see that the idea is that root level folders are being considered as favourites, but anyone who has organised things into more than one level of folders would not consider things that way.

    I’m sure it makes more sense if you created your database in Kyuran, but coming from someone used to the tree structure from KeePass it is quite alien.

    I’m assuming that by customisation you mean we would be able to decide which folders to list, and otherwise use the K menu. That would make sense so if that is where you are going, then ignore the above 🙂

    The hiding of the logo from the dock is good – however the best thing to my mind would be to mimic the “minimse to start tray” effect in Windows. Right now if you minimise the database window, it goes in the dock. Ideally when minimised the only evidence of Kyuran Companion running would be the icon in the menu bar.

    It seems that Copy Username / Password isn’t working ?. Nothing goes into the clipboard. The only way to copy those is to edit an entry and really go the username / password input fields and copy from there with the good old cmd + c 🙂

    Rather than hiding the Dock icon I would like to hide the Menu Bar icon. I’m looking forward to manipulating the favorites, as I have too many root groups to see them all and using the K button is rather inconvenient.

    But nice to see the Companion coming along, it’s quite nice already and I don’t have to use KeePass in Mono or CrossOver anymore, which are awful to use.

    Everything works great except I cannot access the stuffs store at root or the “K” directory. I stored quite a few un-categorized keys there. It used to be the default in the last version.

    The program seems to crash periodically. When it crashes I’m opening a page where I have saved credentials in my browser, but not in KyPass.

    With the new update, I am unable to view subgroups within the root unless I use the less obvious and less functional “k” logo button as some users mentioned above.

    Is there any chance this will be fixed or is this the standard behavior now?

    I’ve been using KeePass on Windows for years, and I’ve been hoping someone would finally make a reasonable OSX version of keepass. My first impression of KyPass Companion is very positive- and everything works quite well. Great job!

    Is this donation-ware? I have been using MiniKeePass on the iPhone, but I will buy your app to support your efforts.

    I have a few questions/comments, but I’ll post them separately.

    It’s not clear to me how to install and use the safari extension. I chose “Install Safari Extension” in the preferences, and it just opened your webpage. There’s nothing new listed in the safari extensions list.

    I didn’t see any help document or how-to– sorry if I missed it.

    I know you are still in beta, so you may be aware of these issues. I’m a software developer myself, so I know how it goes 🙂

    Here are some issues I saw, in case they’re not already on your list:

    – Launching Kypass Companion forces my macbook pro to use the discrete graphics processor instead of the integrated graphics. This massively drains battery life. It doesn’t seem like you’re doing anything fancy with graphics- so it would be much better if the app didn’t force the use of the discrete GPU. (Generally, only things like movie/cad/video stuff should require the GPU).
    – I accidentally deleted an entry and could not undo it.

    And some minor cosmetic issues:

    – Attachments is spelled wrong “Attachements”
    – When I store notes with more than one line of text, I see some visual glitch in the list-overview, like I’m seeing the top pixels of the letters from the second line. (I can send you a screenshot if you want). It should replace newlines with spaces in the Notes, for display in the list-overview.
    – In the search box, if I type in a search key, it shows the search results- great. Then if I backspace over it to clear my search, the results window shows empty, instead of returning to the full list. Also, it would be good to have a little “x” button in the search box to clear the search instead of having to use backspace.

      – I couldn’t reproduce the switch to the discrete graphics processor. On my macbook retina, it always use the intel hd graphics 4000.
      – Undo is not yet handled… It will be added as soon I understand how it works 🙂
      – “attachments” is fixed in v0.8.1 (available now at http://bit.ly/Z7EHsK)
      – top pixel in entry window is also fixed in v0.8.1
      – backspace (or escape) return now to the full list in v0.8.1 (for the X button, it already exists)

        Thanks for the quick response!

        I also have a 15″ mbp retina, and I run gfxCardStatus in Dynamic switching mode- it reports when it switches from integrated to discrete. Here’s what I see:

        My system shows it is in integrated graphics mode.
        I run KyPass. Still in integrated graphics mode.
        I do File / Open, and the Open dialog appears.
        *** The system switches to discrete graphics, and gfxCardStatus reports the dependency as KyPass Companion.
        The system stays in discrete graphics, until I quite KyPass Companion.

        So it appears that the API you are using to open the file dialog is causing the problem.

        Hope this helps track down the issue.

        “Attachments” is right now 🙂

        For the search, I see escape and ‘x’ works (I didn’t notice the ‘x’ before because it isn’t visible after typing and backspacing). For me, it still shows an empty list after backspacing to clear. But the escape key is an ok workaround.

          I also use gfxCardStatus 🙂
          Nothing change when I do “File/Open”. Do you have the case with other applications or only with KyPass companion ?
          I don’t have special function for File/Open. It’s the build in function for NSDocument 🙂

            I just tried File/Open here in Safari and Chrome, and the system stayed in Integrated graphics mode.

            However, I just tried OpenOffice File/Open, and it switched to discrete, with the same behavior as yours.

            After a quick google search, I found this:

            Sounds like you just need to correctly set NSSupportsAutomaticGraphicsSwitching to true in the Info.plist.

            I think you mis-read that. That guy said “this only works *starting* with Mac OS X Lion.”

            And Apple’s tech doc says it allows “OpenGL applications to utilize the integrated GPU on Mac OS X Lion and later”

            That discrete GPU on the MBP is such a drain on the battery, I try to avoid it as much as possible.

    I am having issue since upgrading to new non-tree version. I like the new UI, but the UI is not copying to clipboard usernames and passwords, I have to open the objects and manually copy within. This was not a problem on the previous version. Any advice?

    I also had nested groups, but I just used the browser at the top. Took me a moment to find, not a huge issue.

    Hi again,

    I also use KeePass on Windows. Some of its features would be nice to see on Kypass Companion:
    – notice if the kdbx file on disk has changed, and offer to reload. (I sync my database via dropbox across multiple devices)
    – option to set the idle-time before locking the database and requiring re-entering the master password
    – option to lock the database when the computer sleeps
    – see edit history of each entry, and allow you to view and restore previous versions of entry

    Most everything I use Kypass for works great. I would love to see parity with the Windows version in being able to import custom icons. I love taking a banking or other site logo and dropping it into Keepass and having it appear. Makes passwords faster to find due to the faster processing of an image, rather than text, in our brains.

    Just noticed an option in the settings for the dock – “Minimise windows into application icon”

    With this enabled most applications minimise their windows into the application icon in the dock, rather than a thumbnail of the window in the dock.

    With the Hide Icon option selected in KyPass, the thumbnail is displayed. With the option unselected, KyPass minimises to an icon in the dock.

    The combination of options available seems sufficient to me.

    When using this on Mac OSX 10.8.4 I pretty consistently get 100% CPU utilization. Other than this, the application works fine. KyPass is entering a tight loop somewhere.

      I’m noticing the same CPU utilization issue as Matthew. Seems to occur more for me when I use the search functionality and then clear out the search term.

      Also noticed that the Delete Group option still doesn’t work.

    Would it be possible add an option to the preferences to show the password copied text where it used to appear (over the kypass program)? On a big screen the notification section is way the heck away from where the program is and I tend to miss that it actually copied the text.

      That feature used GPL code from MacPass so it was removed. But considering the development status I’m guess that this feature will reappear in the future.

    Very nice job there! Your responce speed actually beats anything I have seen yet! Keep it coming!
    So, the question: Is there any way to open a database which was created under Windows and does not have a password, but only a key file? For now I enter the path to key file and the button “OK” simply does nothing.

    Thank you so much for this great tool and all your effort and hard work.

    To help with further development, i would like to point out the following.

    when i right-clicked on the toolbar and changed the display type to “Text Only” while the “Hide icon in the dock” was On. It went away only when I switched it off.

    (Note: The pink parts were partly transparent overlays)

    ## On my display only 15 groups are visible on the sidebar, the rest get cut off and are impossible to reach. Should be able to scroll on ‘overflow’ or the layout/design needs to change to accomodate in such cases.

    ### The system menu disappears when i hide the dock icon, making many commands inaccessible, unless it has a shortcut and i know the shortcut e.g. Cmd+S to “Save”. Would be nice to have the menu brought to the forefront when the MenuBar Icon or any item on it is clicked, even if no Windows or Dock Items are visible.

    Using the latest build available. Two issues to report:

    Cannot scroll folders/groups on the left – I need to expand the window to see them all listed.

    Can create folders fine, but cannot then delete them. When trying to delete a folder, the UI shows the folder, *and all the other items in the same containing folder* disappear. However on moving out of the containing folder then back in, nothing has been deleted at all.

    Hi There,
    I have found the 0.8 version crashes periodically for me. this happens when it’s just running in the background with my files open.

    I have also had some instances where it starts using high CPU.

    Also still having some issues with the sort order – when I click Internet on the left my items are always in the same order, but what it’s ordering them by is non-obvious. Alphabetic would be cool.

    When I create a new item, it reorders my items as well: I’d prefer them to just stay in the same sort as they were in before I created the item.

    In regards to Kypass Companion switching to the discrete card, I have a mid-2010 MBP running 10.8.4, Kypass Companion 0.8.1 (94). As soon as the dialog window for password/key comes up, the discrete card switches over and stays until I terminate the app. Changing the NSSupportsAutomaticGraphicsSwitching key from false to true has no effect.

    Just getting started using keepass so this may be a lack of understanding on my part, but I cannot seem to create and reopen a file using kypass companion.

    I can create a new file and save as, but when I try to open it or restart the app it asks for a password and key file, but I never had the option to provide a password/keyfile, so I have no idea what to enter.

    Hi again,

    KyPass Companion is working well- nice work!

    One of the most critical missing features for me is the ability to automatically lock the database after some idle time, requiring the user to re-enter the username and password. And/or to lock the database when the computer sleeps.

    From a security perspective, it’s very bad that the database just stays open forever.

    Do you plan to add this feature?
